Embracing Our Outdoor Surrounds at Happy Feet Childcare Papamoa
Children are naturally curious about the world around them and at Happy Feet Childcare in Papamoa, we are always looking for ways to align this natural curiosity with a learning opportunity. Our environment (taiao) is rich with interesting things to know, and the more tamariki identify with the plants and the animals we live with the more likely they are to take a respectful and protective role in caring for papataunuku (Mother Earth) in the future.
Our Own Backyard
We love to investigate the names of all the things we can find outside in our playground, in the dirt we can find insects and worms, we have birds that come and visit and there are a myriad of things to know when we get into the garden At our early childhood centre in Papamoa, we are very lucky to have our very own garden. This means we can find out about where our food comes from by instigating practical lessons outdoors.
How Does Your Garden Grow
Along with studying the critters that live there we can plant seeds and observe them growing, we can see what works in terms of watering our garden, what extra things we can give to our soil to promote growth, and we can decide when the right time is to pick our vegetables. This carries over to extending learning into the kitchen where we can learn to prepare what we have grown and then take our scraps back outside to compost and feed our garden again.
The Way Things Work
Learning sustainable living practices is part of the day-to-day ethos we employ at our childcare centre in Papamoa. We believe that childcare is about contributing to the growth and development of your tamariki in ways that build their understanding of the connections that bind all of us together. We love to teach an understanding of the community of natural things as being part of who we are as people.
This practice extends to learning about recycling, thinking about ways to reduce our waste, and projects which utilise objects we use every day in new ways past their original use. We also encourage all parents and caregivers to engage with the Happy Feet Papamoa Storypark App, this is an easy way to reduce the amount of paper we are sending home with your tamariki.
